Yoga & social justice
Breath of the Heart (BOTH 100 ) begins next week...I am feeling so excited, it really lights up my heart to be sharing this course again!
One of the things that really sets this training apart is the focus on purpose & social justice. As practitioners and teachers of Yoga today, I believe this is a crucial conversation for exploration, however it can be so uncomfortable and challenging that few people are willing to create the space that is needed to do it.
I believe it is only through sitting bravely in the fire of truth that we can start to create meaningful change. However, I believe also that it is infinitely important to sit in this fire with supportive community, and be always moving with patience and kindness. The breathwork plays a huge part in laying this foundation, the pieces all weave together.
I wanted to share something that I wrote in one of our BOTH sessions led by fabulous guest teacher Sarah Anderson. We were tenderly guided through a process to uncover and refine a series of “I am” statements. Mine are illustrative of so much of what drives me to continue to offer this course, and hold these kinds of spaces, and I know the uncomfortable buzz of vulnerability that I feel about sharing them means that I am right up close with my raw truth -

I am…
I am a 44 year old cys gendered woman.
I am infinitely more empowered and embodied than my younger self dared to dream possible.
I am a mother to 2 young people who are inheriting the legacy of a damaged & abused earth as their home.
I am living on stolen land.
I am directly receiving the privileges of colonialism.
I am living under systems of power that seem so vastly out of my control.
I am not sure how to get off this train.
I am sick to the core about the environmental catastrophe caused by humans.
I am the result of a great deal of childhood trauma.
I am deeply compassionate.
I am motivated by healing & love.
I am deeply passionate about a spiritual practice that has helped me to make sense of so much chaos.
I am practicing & sharing a spiritual tradition from a place & culture to which I can claim no belonging (in this lifetime).
I am making a living from sharing this tradition.
I am doing my best to redistribute money, power & platform.
I am rising in messy leadership.
I am actively creating spaces to amplify marginalised voices, to have uncomfortable conversations and create change.
I am willing to sit in the discomfort of the truth, no matter how much suffering is there.
I am always examining & willing to let go of the comfort I have as a result of oppressive power.
I am ready for change, in all the ways.
I am not here with any answers.
I am ready to trade a safe place for a brave place.
