Breathwork is a powerful therapeutic tool that can stir up trauma on many levels - how we guide the practices informs their potential to heal as well as harm. Learn to thoughtfully layer and invite practices, minimising the potential for re-traumatisation & triggering. Become a trauma aware facilitator, guiding breath work with sensitivity and the awareness to hold the complex & diverse range of experiences that you might experience.
Therapeutic breathwork directly influences the autonomic nervous system by shifting the balance between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) branches.
We will explore the key mechanisms on the Nervous System
Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Slow, deep, or exhale-focused breathing activates the vagus nerve (via respiratory sinus arrhythmia and baroreflex resonance). This sends a safety signal to the brain, acting like a brake on heart rate and lowering blood pressure.
Calming the Amygdala: Regulated breathing stabilizes carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in the blood. This reduces neuronal excitability in the amygdala—the brain's emotional threat-detection center—which helps stop anxiety and panic spirals.
Shifting Brainwave Activity: Slow breathing patterns encourage alpha wave activity in the brain, which is linked to calm alertness and relaxed focus. Fast, shallow breathing promotes beta waves associated with hypervigilance and stress.
Optimizing Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Slow-paced breathing improves HRV, which is a key marker of a flexible, resilient nervous system capable of smoothly transitioning in and out of stress responses.
Clearing Cortisol and Adrenaline: Deep diaphragmatic breathing speeds up the body's clearance of stress hormones like cortisol, helping reset the nervous system after prolonged stress.
How Different Paces Affect the System
Slow-Paced Breathing (e.g., Coherent breathing, Box breathing, or the 4-7-8 technique): Engages the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate, reducing muscle tension, and promoting mental calm.
Fast-Paced Breathing (e.g., Cyclic sighing or transformational high-ventilation work): Can temporarily induce a mild, controlled sympathetic activation or short-term stress response, often followed by a deep parasympathetic rebound (deep relaxation) once normal rhythm is restored

As you commit to regular deep personal practice, there will be structured time to reflect in your own journal, as well as time to discuss your experiences together with the group. In this way you will actively understand the various potential outcomes of this work, learning just as much from the group as from the content itself.

“No matter what we eat, how much we exercise, how resilient our genes are, how skinny or young or wise we are - none of it will matter unless we are breathing correctly. The missing pillar in health is breath. It all starts there.”

frequently asked questions:
-
BOTH 100 is a breath course, but equally a philosophy, history & social justice course. Breathe: 100 is focussed entirely on the breath (of course some philosophy will be woven throughout), so, there will be some similarities to BOTH (eg some of the breath practices will be the same), however there will be a lot of new breath content (kriya, bandha & subtle body application), as well as intelligent sequencing, and more focus on skilfully teaching and the art of holding space.
Students who have completed BOTH 100 will enjoy revisiting familiar practices, as well as discovering a lot of new content.
-
The BOTH 100 course is considered an advanced Yoga Teacher Training. Graduates of the course will receive a 100 hour certification through Yoga Alliance International. After the course you will be ready to teach a wide range of breath practices in various settings - there is no limit to how you might apply this skill in the world. The necessity of Yoga Alliances and the necessity of the certification process is in topical debate currently. Whilst Uma continues to certify through IYA, what is most important to know is that you are receiving highest quality teaching and will qualify to teach with integrity & confidence.
-
Yes! Absolutely everyone can sign up for the course, with the understanding that it is a serious training designed for facilitators.
You don’t have to be a Yoga Teacher, or a facilitator, so long as you have genuine desire to radically deepen your understanding of breathwork.
-
There will be many small (5-10 minute) teaching assessments throughout the immersion, and a final project (20-30 minute session) that will take place via zoom after the immersion.
Aside from this there will be a final written reflection required before certification.

-
You will be given a PDF manual* before our opening session zoom call in early April, the manual has everything you need for the course.
Uma will send links to other articles and videos throughout the course, and it is recommended that you read James Nestor’s “Breath.”
*It is expected that you will print & bind the manual (around $30 at Officeworks) and bring to the Bali immersion. This is because of weight restrictions on flight (it is impossible for Uma to bring them all printed). The extra cost to you has been factored into your total ticket cost.
-
During the course we will practice and begin to understand Modern/Ecstatic Breathwork forms. As this is a complicated subject and a modality that will not appeal to everyone to teach, Uma will run a follow up “pilot course” for those interested in undergoing an apprenticeship to teach Ecstatic Breathwork in Uma’s method.
“the greatest indicator of life span wasn’t genetics, diet, or the amount of daily exercise, as many had suspected. It was lung capacity.”
