Exploring the true History
Exploring the true History of Yoga means sitting with some deeply disturbing and uncomfortable truths about the British colonisation of India, and the subsequent shadows of how Yoga was brought to the West.
During our immersion, we will cultivate a kind, compassionate and brave space as we thoroughly explore how we might continue to both practice and share the deeply healing path of Yoga, whilst at the same time being a part of a much-needed change in Global attitudes and appropriation.
This is a proactive step to honour Yoga's rich history, and, explore how we might share the practices with respect, in a time when they are so needed.
Uma is passionate about History and Philosophy and weaves the two together over six sessions during the final immersive week, providing space for deep discussion about how we might sincerely move from Cultural Appropriation to Appreciation.

Your questions answered
What time are the classes on? Can you give me an idea of the live schedule?
70 hour SCHEDULE
You will receive the full schedule in pdf format, as well as a google calendar link, one week before we begin.
The following is a loose idea of the schedule. As we are working with many guest teachers there may be some small changes.
(all classes AEST Melbourne time)
6am classes:
These classes are always with Uma, and will be practical in nature - learning pranayama techniques, practicing teaching and asking questions about the practices.
Weeks 1, 4 & 7 classes will be held at 6-7.30am every day (mon-sun). These are the intensive pranayama weeks.
10am classes:
During weeks 2,3,5,6,8 & 9 we will have one 10am session on Mondays. Classes will be with both guest teachers and Uma, and run for 90 minutes.
7-9pm session:
During weeks 2,3,5,6,8 & 9 we will have one evening session. These will be held on Tuesday or Thursday evening each week and be either with a guest teacher or Uma.
Week 10 final projects:
Week 10 is exclusively for the final teaching projects. Projects can be submitted via video on the group page, or can be delivered on a live call between 6-7.30am, with 3 students each allocated half an hour to deliver their session. All students are encouraged to join these sessions as participants.
Will there be any required books/readings for the training other than the course manual?
Aside from the course manual, the only required reading for the course is Breath by James Nestor (for the 70 hour module only).
We will offer on demand videos to watch and articles to read throughout the course. We recommend Light on Life, BKS Iyengar, and Tantra Illuminated, Christopher Hareesh Wallace to deepen your study. Shiva sutras - The supreme Awakening
Do you have to submit work?
The 30 hour module is about personal enquiry - you will be required to join into group and small group discussions and encouraged to reflect in your journal. During the final week you will be required to submit a written or video statement/reflection from our dharma classes that show an integration of the subject matter we have explored.
During the 70 hour there will be video projects each week to submit, as well as topics for discussion with your practice partner, journal prompts and personal action invitations.
In the final weeks you will be asked to teach a 20 minute breath session with your group, applying what you have learned.
Basically there will be 3 categories - Yoga teachers getting the certification to teach advanced pranayama, non-Yoga teachers taking the course to either teach foundational pranayama, and/or as self development, and, coaches/therapists/similar who are not yoga teachers but are wanting certification to teach breath practice. The projects will be encouraged for all students, however only if you are taking the certification option the projects are required. There is certainly no pressure to submit anything you don't feel drawn to if you are joining for self enquiry only. We will be encouraging non-teachers to submit short talk to camera videos relating to the weekly projects.
In order to receive certification you must keep up with your weekly video projects/tasks, be present LIVE at minimum 50% online sessions, and, most importantly present your final 20 minute teaching in weeks 10.
How does the certification work for Yoga Teachers & non Yoga Teachers?
The focus of this course is pranayama & philosophy, not asana.
In order to teach physical/movement focussed Yoga in a studio or gym, you need what is called a 'Foundations Training' (200 hour minimum). After that you can add on all kinds of other trainings, some are 5 hours, some 50, 100 or even 300 hours. In this way you can specialise as you like, learning with different teachers.
So, this certificate is designed as an advanced learning module for Yoga Teachers who already have a foundational training certificate.
For non yoga teachers who want to do this course, upon completion you will be absolutely capable and certified to teach foundations pranayama to anyone, or to create your own classes at home/community centres/online etc, and, some studios would absolutely consider having you teach pranayama (only). Those who wish to teach stronger/dynamic pranayama can do so with extra guidance from Uma (please let us know if this is your intention).
If you wanted to do the 200 hour foundations training at some stage in the future, then this would certainly add beautifully to that, and you would be considered a Yoga teacher "specialising" in breathing.
We highly recommend Yoga for Human Kind's 200 hour training with Mei Lai Swan.
If you are behind in your daily hours - does this set you back when it comes to doing the online teacher workshops with yourself and the other teachers?
Not at all! The 1-2 hours a day is really an average of 70 hours broken down over 7 weeks. It includes the 1 hour pranayama/journaling practice daily, which is certainly more powerful if you are being consistent, and another 1 -2 hours on the days where there is a live workshop with Uma or any of the guest teachers. Both the practices & the workshops will all be available to catch up with recordings in your own time. As well, it is expected that you will spend a couple of hours each week studying/practicing teaching with your partner, which can be broken up as fits your schedules. For the non-teachers this partner time will be used to practice teaching foundational pranayama and develop ideas for your projects.
Is it important to be "live" at the online workshops? Is this an integral part of the work that would set you back in the training program?
All the live-stream workshops & learning circles will be recorded for you to watch in your own time. Those taking the course for certification will be required to be at minimum 50% sessions live in person, and to watch the recordings if they don't make the live-stream.
Being there "live" will give you opportunity to be engaged and interactive, and is encouraged as much as possible.
What do the partner sessions involve?
Partner work is applied during the 70 hour Pranayama module only, and is crucial for practicing your teaching. For those wishing to certify to teach dynamic pranayama, the partner sessions are more involved as this is the best place to practice teaching stronger pranayama, as well as giving/receiving feedback. It is up to each partnership how much extra time they can give here, and there are certainly no limitations.
For non yoga teachers this partner time will be used to practice teaching foundational pranayama and develop ideas for your projects (which don't need to be shared for non-teachers), as well as share experiences from the practices, and gain support. We will have a session in the first week about how to best hold space for each other and be supportive during these transformational processes. You & your partner are always welcome to have a check in with Uma and the mentors to ask questions and make sure you are getting the most out of your time together.

Unparalleled Support
During Breath of the Heart 70 (pranayama) you will experience multiple layers of support and focus. Several Mentors from previous BOTH 100 hour trainings will be in the course alongside you to offer support and guidance, as well, of course as Uma, the group leaders and the guest teachers.
You will be allocated a group (held on our private online community via our website) where you can share your video projects, and are encouraged to practice giving & receiving feedback from week 1. Your group leader will facilitate this group, along with Uma.
In addition, you will be paired appropriately with another student to share experiences and practice teaching - we encourage you to do this as much as you you possibly can so that you get as much experience as possible during the course and graduate with unshakeable confidence to teach.
This structure cultivates unparalleled support, making sure that you get the most out of your immersion.
